کیا گزری ہے اُس پہ اورت کی طرح

جو کوئی مرتا ہے تو بدن ہی مر جاتا ہے

English Translation:

What has passed over him, like a woman,

That when someone dies, only the body dies?

Urdu:

میں تو مجرّد شاعر ہوں میرا انداز نمبر ہے

ہر گھڑی کو تبدیل کرتا ہوں جیسے کچھ بھی نہ ہو

English Translation:

I am just a poet, my style is unique,

I change everything every moment as if nothing is.

Urdu:

میں نے تیرے لب کو چھوا تو یوں ہوا

جیسے کوئی ہمسایہ ہو آسمان کا

English Translation:

When I touched your lips, it felt

Like a neighbor to the sky.

Urdu:

خواب کی تاریک راتوں میں

زخم کی راتیں ہیں

English Translation:

In the dark nights of dreams

Are the nights of wounds.

Urdu:

خوشی کو چھوڑ دو، رنج کو گلہ نہ کرو

وہ جو بیگانہ ہو، وہ ملے نہ ملے

English Translation:

Abandon joy, do not complain of sorrow,

Whether you find the stranger or not.

Urdu:

ہر دل میں دو داستانیں ہوتی ہیں

ایک تو وہ جو لوگوں تک بات پہنچے

اور دوسری وہ جو بس دل میں رہ جائیں

English Translation:

Every heart carries two stories,

One that reaches the people,

And the other that stays in the heart.

Urdu:

ایک دل کو ہنسنا چاہیے

اور ایک دل کو رونا چاہیے

English Translation:

One heart should laugh,

And one heart should cry.

Urdu:

مریم ہوا کرتی تھی جوانی میں بھی ان کو

بزم میں لانے کی خواہش، اُن کو بے نیاز کر گئی

English Translation:

Maryam used to desire, even in her youth,

To bring them into the gathering, but they became indifferent.

Urdu:

کبھی خواب ہو جاتے ہیں ادھورے

کبھی دل کو بہلاتی ہیں یادیں

English Translation:

Sometimes dreams remain incomplete,

Sometimes memories deceive the heart.

Urdu:

کوئی ہم نام تھا، کوئی نہام تھا

ہم نے اپنے دل کی بات کہی تھی

English Translation:

Someone was like us, someone was nameless,

We had spoken from our heart.

Urdu:

ہم وہاں ہیں، کہ جہاں سے ہم کو بھی

کچھ ہماری خبر نہیں آتی

English:

We are there, from where even we

Have no news of ourselves.

Urdu:

اک عالم ہے گردوں کا، ہمیں جہاں میں

کیوں نہ ہو وہ پردہ، جو شب سے اُٹھا نہیں

English:

There is a world around us, in our midst

Why not let that veil be, which has not lifted since night.

Urdu:

ہم کو ملکوں کی خبر نہیں، چلتی ہے

ہمارے زخم پر زباں کوئی لگاتا ہے

English:

We have no news of the nations, it seems

Someone is applying a tongue to our wounds.

Urdu:

زندگی کی راہوں میں اُس سے ملنا

بے پناہ خوشیوں کا سبب ہوا کرتا ہے

English:

Meeting her on the paths of life

Has become the cause of boundless joys.

Urdu:

وہ مجھ سے روشن ہے، میں اُس سے محروم

مجھے یہ حق نہیں کہ میں بھی شعلہ ہوں

English:

She is luminous to me, I am deprived of her

I have no right to be a flame as well.

Urdu:

ہم پیشہ ور غالب، مصرعے تراجم کے

کیوں نہ ہو عشق ہمیں بھی، غزل ہمیں بھی

English:

We, the professionals of Ghalib, the compilers of verses

Why not have love for us, poetry for us as well.

Urdu:

اب بھی مجھ میں کچھ خواب بقیہ ہے

جانباز زندگی کی شب تنہائی میں

English:

Still, there are some dreams left in me

In the night of adventurous life, in solitude.

Urdu:

میری زندگی کو غزل سمجھنے والے

دو چار کشتیاں میری پندوں کے پانی میں

English:

Those who consider my life a ghazal

A few boats in the waters of my verses.

Urdu:

جب تک جمالِ زندگی ہو، محبت کو

تم بے وفا، ہم بے حساب رہیں

English:

As long as there is the beauty of life, for love

You remain faithless, and we remain countless.

Urdu:

ہر سحر ہر رات بھی، ہر رات ہر سحر بھی

کبھی آب برقِ انجم تھی، کبھی شرر دوشِ جگر بھی

English:

Every dawn, every night, every night, every dawn

Sometimes it was the water of the stars, sometimes the sparks of the liver.
